Why do split ends stop hair growth?

They don't. This is a misleading myth. Let me explain.

Hair grows only at the very bottom of the hair root, deep in the follicle in the skin. That is the only part that is ';alive';. That is where the cells reproduce, and the build up pushes the older dead hair cells up and out of the skin and you can see it.

When hair is older, and is abused by chemicals, heat and dry air, it eventually comes apart. It gets worn down. Because the outside of the hair shaft has a thin protective layer, that is the first that comes worn off. The inside of the hair shaft is made of many tiny strands of protein... these come apart when the cuticle layer is removed. And it is like a strand of yarn that frays at the end -- it just splits into two or three sections. That is what we see as ';split ends';.

This does not stop the hair from growing. But it breaks off the ends. So you get a shorter hair shaft. The problem is that it splits up the shaft, and a piece comes off. And then more splits and more comes off, and you keep on peeling back more and more length. That is why some say their hair stops growing; that is not true -- it is only not getting longer! The hair is growing down at the root, but the ends keep breaking off. And you get no length.

You can say your hair doesn't grow on your legs -- if you keep shaving all the time. Whatever grows at the root, you cut off the other end. The length never changes, but the hair is always growing.

So if anyone wants to have longer hair, they need to repair those split ends so that the ends don't keep breaking off. Because you have done bad things to your hair over the last year before the damage shows itself, a simple quick trim is not going to do much. You need to stop the things you are doing, and you will need to keep trimming for a long time until you get your hair back into good health. But trimming is a good idea to stop the splits from continuing up the shaft. It also improves the appearance a lot! It is a temporary measure that needs to go along with better overall general care of your hair.

That takes longer to explain than it needs to be! But I hope you understand better what is going on with split ends. Why do split ends stop hair growth?
